After the recent spate of kea deaths around the Arthur’s Pass area, and making the news several times in the past few weeks, DOC have been working with the relevant groups to resolve most of the issues.Temple Basin skifield and Orion have fixed the cables that kea were chewing so that the risk of electrocution has been removed. The NZTA has also established several roading signs to urge people to slow down right down around this important kea habitat. The Arthur’s Pass community are also working to try and remove lead from the township so that lead toxicity is reduced in the local kea population. The majority of people have the kea’s best interest at heart and action is certainly being taken to reduce as many of the risks to kea as possible.
